Elana Newman, Ph.D.
is McFarlin Endowed Chair of Psychology, Associate Professor of Psychology at
the University of Tulsa, and Director of Research for the Dart Center for Journalism
and Trauma. Newman has conducts research on psychological assessment of PTSD
in children, adolescents, and adults and research participants’ reactions
to trauma-related research. In addition, she conducts and supervises studies
on trauma-related occupational health of journalists covering trauma, and the
effects of trauma-related journalistic practices on audience reactions. She
is currently examining the developmental effects of prenatal methamphetamine
exposure as part of a multi-site study. Clinically, se has been actively involved
in raising the standard of clinical care for trauma-exposed children and adults
by training clinicians in various clinical interventions. Clinically, her work
focuses on helping individuals with substance abuse problems and trauma-related
problems. Dr. Newman is a Past President of the International Society of Traumatic
Stress Studies and is Director of Clinical Psychology Training Programs.
